The so-called "insurgents," who wreak such havoc, are not America's enemy. They are not our rivals for territory. They are not our ideological antagonists. Abstracting from the present confrontation, they have no reason to wish us ill.

Americans who bother to imagine the situation from the Iraqi point of view - a massive foreign invasion, launched on false pretenses; a brutal occupation, with control of local oil reserves surely part of the motivation; the heartbreaking deaths of brothers, cousins, children, parents - naturally understand that an "insurgency" is the appropriate response. Its goal is simply to force the invaders and occupiers to leave.
Taken as a whole, or in its parts, Iraq is not an enemy.

Iraqi and U.N. health officials said Monday a 15-year-old girl who died this month was a victim of the deadly H5N1 strain of the bird flu virus, the first confirmed case of the disease in the Middle East.

Exxon profit tops $10 billion

Exxon Mobil Corp. (XOM.N: Quote, Profile, Research), the world's largest publicly traded oil company, on Monday reported a quarterly profit of $10.7 billion, capping a year of record earnings dominated by surging oil and gas prices.

The Home Office said the signals emitted would be picked up only at a distance of a few inches. The new Terminal embodies the occupation in its alienated, bureaucratically cruel form. it is situated between one Palestinian area and another and flanked on both sides by the annexation barrier effectively turning Ramallah into a ghetto.

Currently, more than 50 percent of Iraqi cancer patients are children under the age of 5, up from 13 percent. Children are especially vulnerable because they tend to play in areas that are heavily polluted by depleted uranium.

The Pentagon has been using radiooactive weapons for at least a decade and a half with full complicity of at least three White House administrations and Republican and Democratic congressional legislators.

Conservatively, at least 300 tons and 1,700 tons of depleted uranium were used in the Gulf War and the current Iraq War, resectively. This is about 70 grams of depleted uranium per Iraqi citizen, and if inhaled or ingested, it is enough to kill them all.

Imagine we were to find out one day that Starbucks had been recording everyone's conversations for the purpose of figuring out whether cappuccino is more popular than macchiato. Sure, the result, on the margin, might be a better coffee product. And, yes, we all know, or should, that our conversations at Starbucks aren't truly private. But we'd prefer a coffee shop that wasn't listening-and especially one that won't later be able to identify the macchiato lovers by name. We need to start to think about search engines the same way and demand the same freedoms.

Perhaps one should live, as they say, as if everything you do will soon show up on Page A1 of the New York Observer. But living like that-as if everything you do will be publicly aired one day-is wretched, and the exact opposite of what it means to be living in a free society.

The National Security Agency has issued technical guidance for U.S. officials on redacting or editing sensitive documents for release following a series of embarrassing incidents in which so-called metadata stored in electronic formats like Microsoft Word or Adobe PDF files has been accidentally exposed.

The document, called "Redacting with confidence: How to safely publish sanitized reports converted from Word to PDF," says that these files can "contain many kinds of information, such as text, graphics, tables, images, (and) meta-data."

Installation of the iris technology began in October. The system is now operational after two months of testing. It's not really terrorism he wants to fight. It's opposition from people he can't control.

It's not really US security he wants to protect. It's the power of his regime.

The Constitutional debate about whether these executive privileges are allowable in war is a smoke screen.

This isn't about war: It's about dictatorship. It?s about making power permanent by using private information against you, and by terrifying you with torture.

Team Bush believes it rules by Divine right. It has already re-defined "terrorist" to mean anyone who questions its power. It will use "anti-terrorist" wiretapping as a tool against anyone who dares oppose it.

Yet again, our grossly incompetent CIA, in conjunction with the prevaricating manipulators in the White House, have produced another faked "bin Ladin tape" threatening to attack the United States but "offering a truce." The CIA has produced at least ten "original terrorist" tapes in the past three years. A man named Morton Weil, working for the CIA out of Waco, Texas, puts these together using someone fluent in Arabic. The documents are produced in Langley, sent to the NSC for vetting and, if approved as written, sent by courier to Waco, Texas where they are translated (from the English) into Arabic and then recorded by a person, as yet unnamed, fluent in that language .

Alito, Jr. The article by Rosenbaum helped expose how Alito was long ago an advocate of unrestrained government power.

Web writer Kurt Nimmo wrote an article questioning Rosenbaum's death, and then Kurt Nimmo suddenly terminated his own long-standing website due to death threats. Mr Nimmo seems to have put his web archives back up for a short time...

EU to investigate CIA terror flights

ALLEGATIONS that the CIA has been illegally detaining terror suspects on European soil are to be investigated by a European Parliament committee. The move comes as a report issued yesterday accused the Bush Administration of employing a deliberate strategy of torture.

The 46 members of the EU committee have been given a wide-ranging remit and will be able to call any witnesses that they believe can shed light on whether US intelligence agencies have been flouting basic human rights and EU/US extradition agreements.
