The justification, given endlessly since September 11th, is that both support terrorism and thus pose a risk to the United States. Yet when we step back and examine the region as a whole, it’s obvious that these two impoverished countries, neither of which has any real military, pose very little threat to American national security when compared to other Middle Eastern nations. The decision to attack them, while treating some of region’s worst regimes as allies, shows the deadly hypocrisy of our foreign policy in the Middle East.

Outspoken former Malaysian premier Mahathir Mohamad, who hosted the conference in Kuala Lumpur, won a standing ovation after opening it with a call for George W. Bush and Tony Blair to be tried by an unofficial tribunal for war crimes in Iraq.

"We shouldn't hang Blair if the tribunal finds him guilty," said Mahathir, who seemed to save his strongest venom for the prime minister in an hour-long speech illustrated by pictures of wounded children, deformed babies and tortured men.

"He should always carry the label war criminal, killer of children and liar."

Iranian scientist assassinated by Mossad

A US-funded Iranian radio station reported on Sunday morning that a scientist involved in Iran's nuclear program died two weeks ago in mysterious circumstances.

According to a report in the London's Sunday Times, an American source hinted that the scientist, Prof. Ardshir Hassanpur, 44, was assassinated by the Mossad.

Deadly Bird Flu Virus Found in Britain

The virus strain that killed about 2,500 turkeys on the British poultry farm was identified as the highly pathogenic Asian strain, similar to a virus found in Hungary in January, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said.

It was the first time the deadly H5N1 strain was found on a British farm.

The squat, tan buildings with barred windows can be reached only by driving well outside the city to a flat stretch of desert on the edge of the hills. The site is surrounded by an array of antiaircraft artillery emplacements, each with one or two soldiers at the ready, and a large metal fence topped with barbed wire.

Once inside the reception hall, visitors are greeted by a huge poster that reads, "Nuclear Energy Is Our Obvious Right."

To advertise the Cartoon Network show "Aqua Teen Hunger Force," the network put up 38 blinking signs (kind of like Lite Brites) around the Boston area. The Boston police decided -- with absolutely no supporting evidence -- that these were bombs and shut down parts of the city.

Four children among the 17 dead as Gaza fire fights rage

Buildings in Gaza's two main universities were set on fire yesterday in a major escalation of infighting which health officials said killed at least 17 Palestinians - including four children - and left more than 200 wounded. Armed men mounted flying checkpoints in otherwise deserted streets amid heavy gunfire which continued across Gaza City and the northern Strip despite an "agreement in principle" to try and implement yet another ceasefire.

New York Times --> LAST August, a federal judge found that the president of the United States broke the law, committed a serious felony and violated the Constitution. Had the president been an ordinary citizen ? someone charged with bank robbery or income tax evasion ? the wheels of justice would have immediately begun to turn. The F.B.I. would have conducted an investigation, a United States attorney?s office would have impaneled a grand jury and charges would have been brought.

But under the Bush Justice Department, no F.B.I. agents were ever dispatched to padlock White House files or knock on doors and no federal prosecutors ever opened a case.

New House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers used his first oversight hearing Wednesday to say that he's launching an investigation into President Bush's possible abuse of presidential signing statements.

Smoking Ban Goes Into Effect in France

A ban on smoking in public spaces went into effect Thursday in France.

The ban prohibits lighting up in workplaces, schools, airports, hospitals and other "closed and covered" public places. Bars, cafes and restaurants are exempt for the moment, but are also to go smoke-free next year.
