US ammunition tells its own story in Egypt

US support, and US politicians putting Israel’s interests above those of their own country, that has allowed dictators such as Hosni Mubarak of Egypt to desecrate the Arab world with their existence for so long.

It has been lost on no one that the empty shell casings from live ammunition and gas cannisters, which litter Tahrir Square and other streets across Egypt, were provided by the United States of America.

But do not for one minute think the Egyptian people are stupid – sadly the US has once again completely misread and underestimated an entire population.

These demonstrations are as much a protest against US meddling in their affairs as they are against the Mubarak regime.

Anger starting to focus on Israel, US

Saturday’s optimism on the streets of Cairo for imminent political change gave way to anger on Sunday, as thousands of demonstrators became increasingly frustrated with the lack of response from major world leaders, especially the US.

During the main protest on Sunday in downtown Cairo, one man painted a 20- meter-long message in flowing Arabic cursive that echoed across the square: “Go Away, Mubarak, you are from the Americans, and you’re working for them!”

They blame Israel and the US for supporting a government because it is convenient for them, not because it is good for the Egyptian people.

“The USA does not support democracy; they’re supporting Israel, which is like their baby,” said Ahmed, a 26-year-old Cairo resident.
“But will Israel allow us to have a real president?"
"...the USA is supporting the system, not the people.”

Prince warns S. Arabia of apocalypse

Saudi Prince Turki bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud has warned the country's royal family to step down and flee before a military coup or a popular uprising overthrows the kingdom.

He warned that the Saudi royal family is no longer able to "impose" itself on people, arguing that deviations in carrying out the religious concepts that make up the basis of the Saudi government "have gotten out of our hands," so that the opposition views our acts as "interfering in people's private life and restricting their liberties."

"If we are wise, we must leave this country to its people, whose dislike for us is increasing," said Prince Turki, advising Saudi officials to escape with their families.

"Do not fool yourself by relying on the United States or Britain or Israel, because they will not survive the loss; the only door open is now the exit door of no return. Let us go before it closes."

Watching the ‘news’ on the Fox Network last night was like watching a skit on Comedy Central. It wasn’t about why events were taking place in Egypt, but the emphasis was on what it means to the price of oil (up $4.00 a barrel since the rioting broke out). Who controls those prices? It was about who was behind the ‘riots’. The report started out by saying that they were sparked by university students posting their feelings on FaceBook, calling it a ‘Web Inspired Revolution’ ….. but ending with the support of The Muslim Brotherhood, Al Quaida, Hamas and of course, the Iranian government. In other words, it’s the Boogey Man that is behind the ‘riots’. They obviously have nothing to do with the fact that the people of Egypt are sick and tired of living under a dictatorship.

While the US favours Egyptian political reform in theory, in practice it props up an authoritarian system for pragmatic reasons of national self-interest. It behaved in much the same way towards Saddam Hussein's regime in the 1980s, when Iraq was at war with Iran. A similar tacit bargain governs relations with Saudi Arabia. That's why, for many Egyptians, the US is part of the problem.

Yemeni Protests Turn Violent

At least nine protesters were set upon by police with batons when security forces blocked up to a hundred demonstrators as they attempted to march to the Egyptian Embassy here, in a show of solidarity with protesters in Egypt, according to eyewitnesses.

Egypt Turns Off the Internet

Egypt's decision to turn off the Internet last night, denying users access to Twitter, Facebook and text messaging, couldn't stop thousands of protesters from taking to the streets of Cairo Friday morning, with similar demonstrations in Suez, Alexandria and Al Arish in northern Sinai. Supporters of pro-democracy leader Mohammed ElBaradei, who called for the ouster of President Hosni Mubarak, flooded out of mosques after noon prayer. Police greeted them with tear gas and rubber bullets. According to the AP, who has raw footage of a man being shot, they used a water cannon on Nobel laureate ElBaradei and beat protesters who tried to shield him. Egyptian protesters have been particularly effective at utilizing social media to organize and mobilize—this past Tuesday's demonstration was largely arranged via Twitter. Egypt can turn off the Internet—but it can't stop satellite TV. Although news media efforts to report on events on the ground have been hampered by the communications clampdown, Al Jazeera has moved to fill the vacuum.

Egyptian protests intensify, as clashes spread across the Middle East

Security forces shot dead a Bedouin protester in Egypt's Sinai region on Thursday, bringing the death in the three days of protests to five. Police in Suez fired rubber bullets, water cannon and tear gas at hundreds of demonstrators calling for an end to the 30-year-old rule of Hosni Mubarak, the Egyptian president. Protesters chucked rocks and petrol bombs at police lines. In Ismailia, hundreds of protesters clashed with police, who dispersed the crowds with tear gas.
