Egyptians rally for Mubarak to go now

Hundreds of thousands of Egyptians marched peacefully in Cairo on Friday to demand an immediate end to President Hosni Mubarak's 30-year rule, but there was no word of his generals, or his U.S. allies, squeezing him out just yet.

"Leave! Leave! Leave!" they chanted after weekly Friday prayers in Cairo. A cleric praised the "revolution of the young" and declared: "We want the head of the regime removed."

Who are the pro-Mubarak demonstrators?

The morning after Mubarak dramatically announced he would not run for re-election in September, his supporters waded into Tahrir Square by the thousands, and suddenly, serious, prolonged violence reigned in central Cairo.

There were immediate suspicions that the pro-Mubarak demonstrators were not simply average citizens standing up for the man who has led Egypt for three decades -- suspicions that proved at least partly founded.

As battles raged between the two sides, some pro-Mubarak protesters were captured by his opponents. Some were terrified to be caught and begged for their lives, screaming that the government had paid them to come out and protest.

Others turned out to be carrying what seemed to be police identification, though they were dressed in plain clothes.

President Hosni Mubarak will say in a speech that he will step down at the next election but would stay in office until then, Al Arabiya TV said on Tuesday.

The network, which did not name its source, said the president would make those comments in a speech later on Tuesday.

Egyptians fill Tahrir Square in massive rally

Al-Jazeera TV estimated the crowd in the square at close to the 1 million organizers had called for.

Soldiers ringed the square but let protesters pass after checking them for IDs and weapons.

The demonstration was under tight army security, but both sides avoided confrontations. The army pledged not to use force against demonstrators as long as they are non-violent.
