Canada Post halts Gaza-bound mail

In a statement to customers on Tuesday, Canada Post said it has been informed by Israel Post that mail service to the coastal Palestinian territory is unavailable "due to circumstances beyond their control."

Canada Post does not stop delivering mail to countries or areas. Instead, countries indicate they can not receive mail for conflict or other reasons.

Canada Post said it has not been able to find alternate routes to move mail in the area.

Seductive, fascinating and frightening, Countdown to Zero motivates the public to support complete nuclear disarmament and to fear Iran, which is conveniently the next country the US wants to invade. Framed in no-nuke rhetoric, Countdown to Zero is not-so-subtle agitprop. The film relies on conventional geopolitics to whip up conventional audiences into another conventional state of panic. Islamo-terrorists just can’t acquire this technology! This is painfully similar to what we were told prior to the invasion of Iraq.

The calculator busily counting out how much money the United States has spent on wars since 2001 has raced past $1 trillion — $1,024 billion plus at the start of August. There is little point in trying to give a more refined figure since the clock ticks remorselessly on, mesmerizingly faster than you can write the sum down, about $260,000 blown away in each passing minute.

Feds admit storing checkpoint body scan images

For the last few years, federal agencies have defended body scanning by insisting that all images will be discarded as soon as they're viewed. The Transportation Security Administration claimed last summer, for instance, that "scanned images cannot be stored or recorded."

Now it turns out that some police agencies are storing the controversial images after all.

No, The Combat Troops Are Not All Leaving Iraq

The only difference is that we will now call them by a different name, in which the word “combat” no longer appears. They are now termed "advise and assist brigades" by the administration, and the press dutifully reported this new term in their stories.

What the administration has done (and the press would know this if they’d simply do their collective job) is rebrand the Iraqi mission with an new tag-line (“New Dawn”), and re-label six fully-combat-capable brigades with new, kinder and gentler titles. That’s basically the story.

Germany gave assassination list to secret US unit

Buried in the 92,000 pages of documents released by the Web site Wikileaks is evidence that show the German government abetted a secret program to kill or capture Taliban leaders. The German government has already been helping the US generate a "hit list" through NATO, but this list went a step farther, bypassing transparency and judicial process.

US military, intelligence agencies press attack against Wikileaks

Jacob Appelbaum, a 27-year-old software developer from the Seattle area, said he was taken aside by ICE agents as he returned through Newark, New Jersey from an overseas trip. He was questioned for three hours about his relations with Wikileaks and its founder, Julian Assange, and his opinions on the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. His laptop computer and three cell phones were seized, although the laptop was later returned, presumably after its contents were copied.

Appelbaum told the press that the ICE agents refused to allow him access to a lawyer during the interrogation, and threatened a similar detention for questioning any time he travels abroad, which he does regularly for his job developing software to improve online privacy.

Child confronts Israeli forces over father's detention

Video footage of a four-year-old child begging Israeli forces to release his father from detention on Monday has circulated the globe.

"You dog, give me my dad. I want daddy. I want daddy. Give me my dad," cried Khalid Fadel Al-Ja’bari, as Israeli border guards detained his father Fadel, 36 in the Al-Baq'a village east of Hebron, where Israel's Civil Administration began destroying what it described as an illegal water irrigation network.
