Can you really not see?

by element115
Haaretz --> A MUST READ
Let us leave aside those Israelis whose ideology supports the dispossession of the Palestinian people because "God chose us." Leave aside the judges who whitewash every military policy of killing and destruction. Leave aside the military commanders who knowingly jail an entire nation in pens surrounded by walls, fortified observation towers, machine guns, barbed wire and blinding projectors. Leave aside the ministers. All of these are not counted among the collaborators. These are the architects, the planners, the designers, the executioners.

But there are others. Historians and mathematicians, senior editors, media stars, psychologists and family doctors, lawyers who do not support Gush Emunim and Kadima, teachers and educators, lovers of hiking trails and sing-alongs, high-tech wizards. Where are you?

Could it be that you are all in favor of a racist Citizenship Law that forbids an Israeli Arab from living with his family in his own home? That you side with further expropriation of lands and the demolishing of additional orchards, for another settler neighborhood and another exclusively Jewish road? That you all back the shelling and missile fire killing the old and the young in the Gaza Strip?

Who's trying to stop the government from telling its citizens where their tax dollars are being spent?

by element115
Just before the August recess, the Senate was set to vote on a bill introduced by Sens. Barack Obama (D-IL) and Tom Coburn (R-OK) that would create a public, searchable database of all federal grants and contracts. Envisioned as a Google-like website, it would provide free, immediate access the information, which can be alarmingly difficult to obtain.

The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee unanimously passed the measure July 27th, and S.2590 seemed to be speeding on its way to full Senate passage when, in the dark of night, an unknown Senator placed a "secret hold" on the bill. According to Senate courtesies, the bill will never come to a vote as long as the hold continues.

So who's the culprit?

US vs. Iran - Is An Attack Inevitable?

by element115
"Naturally, the common people don't want war ... but after all it is the leaders of a country who determine the policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in every country."

So wrong that it re-defines "wrongness"

August 27, 2006 by element115
Glenn Greenwald --> Steyn is the person whom Bush followers think is a visionary and prophet whom we should also listen to now with regard to what we should do about Iran and the broader Middle East. Allegiance to the Cause of Good is paramount, and there is thus no price paid by True Believers for fundamental error, grave misjudgment, or just outright deceit. Steyn -- and the long list of Bush loving comrades who mouthed these same pieties -- was painfully, disastrously wrong about the most profound political and military question of our generation. He ought to be too ashamed to continue pontificating and too shunned to be able to do so -- at the very least without his admitting error, recanting and apologizing.

But the opposite is true. The same people who were wrong about everything -- literally -- and who viciously mocked those who were right, now want to use the same mindset and assumptions to guide us into our next war.

Wrong War, Wrong Word

by element115
If you control the language, you control the debate. As the Bush Administration's Middle Eastern policy sinks ever deeper into bloody incoherence, the "war on terror" has been getting a quiet linguistic makeover. It's becoming the "war on Islamic fascism."

"Islamo-fascism" looks like an analytic term, but really it's an emotional one, intended to get us to think less and fear more. It presents the bewildering politics of the Muslim world as a simple matter of Us versus Them, with war to the end the only answer.

Hitchens Gives the Finger to Maher's Audience for 'Frivolous' Jeering of Bush

by element115
Writer/author Christopher Hitchens on Friday night gave the finger to the Los Angeles studio audience of HBO's Real Time with Bill Maher. As he laid out the case for how it's Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad who wants World War Three, not George W. Bush, Hitchens cited how Ahmadinejad "says the Messiah is about to come back." Maher quipped: "So does George Bush, by the way." That caused a loud eruption of audience applause and cheering, which led Maher to clarify: "That's not facetious." The crowd continued to applaud as Hitchens remarked, about those in attendance who had earlier cheered and laughed as Maher called Bush an "idiot" repeatedly: "That's not facetious. Your audience, which will clap at apparently anything, is frivolous." Loud oohs and groans emanated from the audience, prompting Hitchens to give them the finger as he castigated them, "Fuck you, fuck you," while the groans continued.

Exactly 1,244 days later, on 7 May 1945, Germany surrendered. The US invaded Iraq on 19 March 2003, and this weekend it is 1,267 days later, with no end in sight.

We know that Blair gave the go-ahead for the arrests, even as the authorities must have told him they lacked the evidence and at best it was premature. Some reports from British police insiders claim that the Bush Administration pushed Blair for early arrests and the announcement of the ?liquid bomb? plot. Security officials then launched a massive, all-out ?terror propaganda? campaign designed to capture the attention and support of the public with the total support of the mass media. The security-mass media campaign served its objective -- Bush?s popularity increased, Blair avoided censure and both continued on their vacations.

Fear or Anger will do nothing but cause you to make mistakes. Israel has for years been accused of both in its systematic dispossession, oppression and killing of Palestinians. However, the continued silence on the part of the international community has sent a dangerous message to Israel that it need not feel restrained in either the methods or weapons it uses in its military operations, and so it has set the bar of violence ever higher.

Q: And would that program that you designed, be something that elections officials... could detect?

A: They'd never see it.

Six months or 12 months from now would be too late, he said.

-- Yes, we can certainly do that. The procedure is basically the same as it is with a live animal, except the tissue sample has to be taken within 48 hours of death.

As we witness the unfolding spectacle of ferocious, indiscriminate violence, destruction, and brutality in Gaza and Lebanon, it's difficult to resist the conclusion that there is something terribly wrong with the Israeli state and society. It's as though all moral and psychological constraints and boundaries have been breached, deviancy normalised. Not that state terrorism, deliberate aggression, extreme disproportionate force, and massive violations of international humanitarian law are new to the Israeli state: from 1948, the list is long, the evidence widely available.

Directly or indirectly, your destiny has in large part been engineered by the claws of American intervention in your country, creating, in large sectors of the population, vicious cycles of endemic poverty, uneducation, misery, bitterness, resentment and a simmering longing to release, sometimes violently, boiling emotions of pent up anger, if not at America directly then at her stooges acting as leaders. It has been you, the children of the region, who have suffered the most at the hands of the Evil Empire, millions upon millions of vibrant human energies ranging in age from the recently born to those teenagers forced by circumstance and tragedy to grow old before youth disappears.

The 'Neoconservative' Sufi Muslim Council

by element115
The Washington neo-cons, President Karimov of Uzbekistan and Jack Straw appear to be linked to a newly prominent "Muslim interest group" that supports the occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan and Israeli action in the Lebanon...

Who and what is the "Sufi Muslim Council"? They seem to have emerged from nowhere ? suddenly their spokesman is interviewed on Radio 4 and Newsnight and a Channel 4 documentary gives their views some weight. They have a new website and a new magazine. But hardly anyone knows who they are or what they stand for?

We wanted to know the answer to these questions so we set about doing some basic research. We have uncovered very worrying links between this new council and the neocons in Washington. There are also links to some of the most brutal regimes in the world e.g. the Karimov regime in Uzbekistan. We have also unearthed allegations of dodgy business dealings and vote rigging.

The Real Terrorism Plot

What a planet

by element115
1. More than half of the 6.5 billion human souls populating Earth subsist on less than $2 per day. 790 million of the deeply impoverished suffer from chronic malnutrition (while 65% of US Americans are overweight).

2. 20% of the human race does not have access to clean water and 31% of the world?s population has no electricity.

3. Combining the gross domestic products of the 48 poorest nations (representing 25% of global population) yields a figure that is less than the wealth of the three richest people in the world.

4. ?Developed nations? account for 80% of the world?s consumption and 20% of the world?s population.

5. The wealth gap between the richest and poorest countries went from 3 to 1 in 1820 to 72 to 1 in 1992.

6. Corporations account for over half of the 100 wealthiest entities in the world.

7. And most tragically:

"According to UNICEF, 30,000 children die each day due to poverty. And they "die quietly in some of the poorest villages on earth, far removed from the scrutiny and the conscience of the world. Being meek and weak in life makes these dying multitudes even more invisible in death."
That is about 210,000 children each week, or just under 11 million children under five years of age, each year."

"Dark matter" is real

August 22, 2006 by element115
A team of U.S. scientists has found the first direct evidence of the existence of "dark matter," a little-understood substance with a huge influence on gravity, the team's leader said on Tuesday.

Scientists still do not know what exactly dark matter is, but have theorized it must exist to account for the amount of gravity needed to hold the universe together.

They estimate that the substance accounts for 80 to 90 percent of the matter in the universe. The more familiar kind of matter, which can be seen and felt, makes up the rest.

Now researchers led by University of Arizona astronomer Doug Clowe say they have evidence to back up their theories.

Fearing information leaks and criticism, Iran gagged local newspapers from criticizing Tehran's decisions. Iran's government has urged the judiciary to clamp down on newspapers which spread "lies", a government official wrote in a letter to Tehran's prosecutor Saturday.

Canadian delegation used the term "crimes against humanity" to describe what they saw in Lebanon

by element115
A delegation of Canadian opposition parliamentarians toured the devastation of southern Lebanon yesterday and slammed Prime Minister Stephen Harper for supporting what two MPs called "crimes against humanity."

"As we drove, kilometre after kilometre, house after house, apartment after apartment, village after village was destroyed," a visibly upset Mr. Wrzesnewskyj said afterward. The delegation met with Human Rights Watch representatives, who presented evidence that Israeli forces used cluster bombs in civilian areas.

Uncomfortable Truths about Israel

What would we be saying if Hizbullah kidnapped the Israeli Deputy Prime Minister and launched a daring raid inside Israel to disrupt a U.S. effort to resupply the Israeli Defense Force?

Hell, we'd probably have the National Security Council in session and be ready to dispatch U.S. military forces to help Israel.

Overexposure: When media coverage blocks out the sun

by element115
...the real issue is the amount of coverage lavished upon the story. In that sheer volume of stories, there's a lesson for consumers in how the media work - and it's not really about JonBenet.

The fact is, when the US news media really turn their attention to a topic, they do a very thorough job.

...when the media, particularly television news shows and especially the 24-hour cable networks, turn their focus on an issue, most everything else disappears. That means the issue is much larger than the JonBenet saga.

To preserve Canada's credibility?

by element115
Minister of Public Safety Stockwell Day rejected the notion that dropping Hezbollah from the terror list would aid in negotiating peace in the Middle East.

...a bipartisan committee currently on fact-finding mission in Lebanon suggested that dropping Hezbollah from Canada's list of terrorist organizations would help in negotiating peace.

The bipartisan committee includes members of the three opposition parties, but no Tory delegates.

"We spoke to leaders of the [Lebanon's] oppositions parties who said they felt it was important that Hezbollah be drawn into the democratic process and they supported continuing that process. I think that's important. I'm not here to say whether Hezbollah should or shouldn't be a terrorist organization; our government has made that decision. It's not the point of the mission."

What Does Israel Want?

by element115
Justin Raimondo --> Is anyone really surprised that Israel violated the cease-fire? Here, after all, is a nation that has defied the United Nations on 321 different occasions, refused to sign the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, and proudly proclaims its own lawlessness. Only a fool, or a masochist, would count on Tel Aviv to keep its agreements. Apart from that, however, this latest raid underscores the real objective of what the American media insists on calling the Israeli "incursion" (never "invasion") into Lebanon: it's all about Syria and Iran.

It wasn't the first time President Bush had described the United States as at war with "Islamic fascists." But coming in his remarks about the arrests of two dozen terror suspects in Britain last week, the phrase signaled that the administration was shopping for new language to defend its policies at a time when the evocations of the "war on terror" don't seem to stem rising doubts about the wisdom of "staying the course" in Iraq.

No evidence against 'airline terror mastermind'

by element115
The Briton alleged to be the ?mastermind? behind the airline terror plot could be innocent of any significant involvement, sources close to the investigation claim.

Rashid Rauf, whose detention in Pakistan was the trigger for the arrest of 23 suspects in Britain, has been accused of taking orders from Al Qaeda?s ?No3? in Afghanistan and sending money back to the UK to allow the alleged bombers to buy plane tickets.

But after two weeks of interrogation, an inch-by-inch search of his house and analysis of his home computer, officials are now saying that his extradition is 'a way down the track' if it happens at all.

It comes amid wider suspicions that the plot may not have been as serious, or as far advanced, as the authorities initially claimed.
