Commentary on the October 29, 2004 Bin Laden tape

October 30, 2004 by element115
Laura Dawn Lewis ---> US Policy is defined as: Israel/Palestine, ending the US support of apartheid and ethnic cleansing the United States funds, supports and diplomatically protects from International law; invading countries that did not attack us on false pretense and an end to shielding the governments of Saudi Arabia and other regimes hurting their people.
Bin Laden's objections to our foreign policy are legitimate. What we are doing by proxy in Palestine is wrong. Not my opinion, that is according to the Hague Resolutions, Geneva Conventions, Rome Statues, The United Nations, our own constitution and International law.
For those using the God excuse, nearly everything the US funds in Palestine ignores the teachings of the Gospels, which for Christians is the final word of God and take precedence over all books of the Old Testament. Those justifying this ethnic cleansing with Old Testament prophecies and quotes, negate the whole point, message, meanings and teachings of Christ behaving as if the year is 24 BC, not 2004 AD. This distortion represents another botulism infested can of twisted worms Bush's agenda exploits well. It, Chiliastic Christianity, continues as a root cause and enabler of terrorism. Without it, peace would have been achieved in the Middle East, three decades ago.
What we are doing in Iraq is wrong. Again, not my opinion. That statement originates with the Hague Resolutions, the Geneva Conventions, Rome Statues, our own constitution and International law. Terrorism's defeat only occurs upon the removal its causes: Oppression, greed, apartheid, ethnic cleansing, occupation, colonization, conquest and invasion, not the leaves, flower or seeds illustrated by the people. Our policies cause terrorism both in Palestine and Iraq. And yes, the two conflicts are intimately connected. Anything other than addressing the realities on the ground of these two policy nightmares feeds terrorism.
Unfortunately, this tape provides fuel for Bush's objectives. Our "I'm never wrong and my actions are God inspired" President Bush and "Me too" Kerry backed by warmongers and profiteers can now use any attempt addressing the causes of terrorism as being 'influenced by the terrorists'. This well-timed tape along with its effectiveness at vilifying anyone looking for diplomatic solutions eradicates humane resolutions, opting for the barbaric while effectively segregating those promoting diplomacy thus insuring this "war" goes on indefinitely. Concurrently it creates enough fear to insure the money keeps rolling in and the remaining portions of the PNAC plan, now known as the Bush Doctrine can continue to clear the Middle East of any person not 100% behind Israel or the US.
By appealing to the American people, this tape differentiates itself from all others. What the tape says to me, reading between the lines is:

"Here's your chance America. We don't hate you. We hate what you're doing so we're giving you one last opportunity to change your ways. If you choose to continue killing us, our children, our culture and our faith, you leave us no choice but to fight back. Stop interfering with our ability to live and we'll stop interfering with you. If you don't, you have only yourselves to blame."

I see this as the moral equivalency of a clear conscience from bin Laden's point of view. His way of giving us one last chance to reverse this course. In his mind I'm believe he's saying:

"See I told the American people what they need to do in order to avoid being attacked. I'm not asking them to do anything illegal. I'm just asking them to stop doing what is illegal and return to the principles and values they pretend they espouse. And look, they don't care. They want to kill us. Therefore since they won't stop killing us and messing with our lives, they are not innocent any longer. Not their women. Not their children, none of them. Not innocent in God's eyes and not innocent in mine. They allowed this to happen, therefore all are responsible."

Our governement has used 9/11 to strip us of our most personal rights and control the American people, basically taking our freedom and convincing us that the loss of freedoms is freedom. They've told us persons against pre-emptive strikes and our consistent violations of international law are unpatriotic. This administration brands diplomacy and addressing the causes as anti-American.
...Now...the most ominous, I suspect this tape is a gesture, a warning and a last opportunity for peace, which the bullheaded nature of our government now will never approach on the convenience of "being influenced by terrorists".
We can create a win/win here and eliminate terrorism. But to so that we must step out of the fear and actually begin to think.

...free people do not give up their security: bin Laden

October 29, 2004 by element115
AP ---> Osama bin Laden, publicly injecting himself into the campaign four days ahead of presidential elections, said in a videotape aired Friday that the United States can avoid another Sept. 11 attack if it stops threatening the security of Muslims.
He refrained from directly warning of new attacks although he said "there are still reasons to repeat what happened."
"We fought you because we are free ... and want to regain freedom for our nation. As you undermine our security we undermine yours," bin Laden said.
Before the tape was aired, the State Department urged the government of Qatar, which finances Al-Jazeera, not to broadcast it, a senior State Department official said.
Al-Jazeera broadcast about seven minutes of the tape.

WRH ---> If the new Osama tape is real, it only underscores that Bush has spent two hundred billion dollars and the lives of a thousand Americans without actually making the US any safer from Osama.

You and I are trapped behind Homeland Security, hassled at airports, spied upon, frisked, and confined to "Free speech zones", while this latest Osama, clearly rested and healthy, goes where he will, into TV studios, and is able to send taunting video tapes with impunity.

When the Osamas of the world are free while we who pay the bills are prisoners, this must be counted a complete failure by the administration which claims so many extraordinary powers under the banner of the "war on terror".

Arafat return to West Bank guaranteed by Israel

by element115
A deal to allow the Palestinian president to leave the West Bank was apparently secured after Israel gave ironclad assurances to King Abdullah of Jordan and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak that Arafat would be allowed to return when he was ready. Arafat has been confined to his Ramallah compound since 2001.
He has been unable to leave in case Israel refused to allow him back in the country.

Sixty thousand votes, or to be more precise, fifty-eight thousand votes is a lot of votes in a swing state such as Florida, where four years ago the world looked on aghast as the Bush regime stole the election away from the Democratic candidate, Al Gore.
Four years on, days before the election, the world looks on again, this time hardly surprised because the below-the-belt blow we have been expecting has arrived. 58.000 absentee ballots have been sent, but never arrived.

Two Years Before 9/11, Bush was Already Talking About Attacking Iraq

by element115
"He was thinking about invading Iraq in 1999," said author and journalist Mickey Herskowitz. "It was on his mind. He said to me: 'One of the keys to being seen as a great leader is to be seen as a commander-in-chief.' And he said, 'My father had all this political capital built up when he drove the Iraqis out of Kuwait and he wasted it.' He said, 'If I have a chance to invade·.if I had that much capital, I'm not going to waste it. I'm going to get everything passed that I want to get passed and I'm going to have a successful presidency." Herskowitz said that Bush expressed frustration at a lifetime as an underachiever in the shadow of an accomplished father. In aggressive military action, he saw the opportunity to emerge from his father's shadow. The moment, Herskowitz said, came in the wake of the September 11 attacks. "Suddenly, he's at 91 percent in the polls, and he'd barely crawled out of the bunker."

Should a small country succeed in breaking free and establish its own way of developing, then its good example to others becomes a threat to Washington.

Terrorism and international law: why conventions matter

by element115
If the "war on terrorism" truly is a "war," then the laws of armed conflict apply, both to the states combating terror and to the terrorists themselves. These laws, commonly known as the Geneva Conventions and their Protocols, prohibit acts of terror. The laws of armed conflict can never be suspended; they are designed precisely to apply in situations of great danger and violence. Certain parts of international human rights law, on the other hand, may be suspended in times of public emergency. The freedoms of speech, association and assembly, for example, may be restricted under carefully defined conditions. Other rights, like the right to life and the prohibition on torture, can never be suspended, even in all-out war. This is why it is so important that those responsible for the torture and cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment of detainees at US prisons in Iraq and Afghanistan be prosecuted and punished.

"The situation is serious and we will have to examine tomorrow (Thursday) what to do at the level of the Palestinian leadership," he said.
Arafat, 75, kept under virtual Israeli house arrest at his West Bank headquarters in Ramallah since December 2001, has lost consciousness for several hours, Israeli public radio reported earlier.

Falluja emptied of women and children

by element115
If U.S.-led forces carry out a threatened full-scale assault on the Iraqi city of Falluja, they will find the rebel stonghold virtually deserted.
Thousands of women and children have long since fled almost daily bombardment of the city by U.S. warplanes.
Shops open for only a few hours a day. Their shutters close when the first shots are fired in frequent clashes between U.S. marines on the edge of Falluja and guerrillas in the city.

Iran Threatens to End Nuclear Talks

Iran's supreme leader threatened to pull out of negotiations if European countries press their demand for total suspension of uranium enrichment, as a new round of talks ended Wednesday without an agreement to avert the possible threat of U.N. sanctions.
Britain, France and Germany are trying to work out a deal that would avoid a standoff with Iran over its nuclear program, which the United States says aims to develop nuclear weapons.

ABC Defends Decision to Hold Off on Tape Broadcast

by element115
ABC News has asked U.S. security officials to examine a videotape it obtained in Pakistan of an English-speaking man threatening a massive attack on the United States, the network says.
Sources familiar with the tape -- the authenticity of which U.S. intelligence officials have not been unable to verify -- said the man, who claims to be a U.S. native and al Qaeda supporter, warns that the "streets will run with blood."
ABC News vice president Jeffrey Schneider said the network has not shown the video because its authenticity has not been verified by either independent analysts or government experts.
"We have worked with the CIA and the FBI, neither of whom have authenticated the tape," he told Reuters. "Obviously, it would be beyond irresponsible to broadcast this tape without first authenticating it."

Psy - Wars

by element115
...history is littered with innumerable examples of psy-war operations conducted by the US around the planet, whether it was covert backing of the invasion of Cuba in 1961 or its support (and training) of death squads in Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua all the way through to its arming and support of UNITA in Angola for decades. Therefore it should come as no surprise that the US would be up to its neck in such operations as kidnappings and executions, all purportedly orchestrated by one man, Abu Masaab al-Zarqawi.

Iran: A Bridge too Far?

by element115
No one disputes that Tehran is pursuing a dangerous path, but with 200 or more Israeli nukes targeted upon them the Iranians' insistence on keeping their options open is understandable. Clearly, the nuclear nonproliferation regime today hangs by the slenderest of threads. The world has arrived at a fateful crossroads.
If a showdown over Iran develops in the coming months, the man who could hold the outcome in his hands will be thrust upon the world stage. That man, like him or hate him, is Russian President Vladimir Putin.

On Anti-Semitism

by element115
In the light of the growing discussion initiated by Israeli politicians and Zionist enthusiasts regarding the eruption of new anti-Semitism I am here to announce as loudly as I can: there is no anti-Semitism any more. In the devastating reality created by the Jewish state, anti-Semitism has been replaced by political reaction. I am not suggesting that Jewish interests are not being mutilated and vandalized. I am not saying that synagogues aren't being attacked, that Jewish graves are not brutally smashed up. I am saying that these acts, that are in no way legitimate, should be seen as political responses rather than racially motivated acts or 'irrational' hate crimes.

"Over the past three years, the gap between ambition and reality has created what could be termed a 'Bush bubble'," it said.

Top 31 Reasons Why Ethnic Communities Will Vote For Kerry

by element115
According to yet another poll, this one done by the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies, a whopping 18 percent of African Americans support George W. Bush in this year's election. In the 2000 election President Bush received 9 percent of the African American vote. So let's get this straight, since the last presidential election, George W. Bush's support among African Americans has actually doubled?!
The poll goes on to absurdly suggest that Blacks over 50 are migrating over to the Republican Party while younger ones are flocking to the Democrats. Middle-aged and senior African Americans are some of the staunchest Democrats in the country, yet the Republicans have somehow captured the hearts and minds of the Black Civil Rights generation in less than four years.

Data mining offshore raises privacy fears

October 25, 2004 by element115
It began as one of the Bush administration's most ambitious homeland security efforts, a passenger screening program designed to use commercial records, terrorist watch lists and computer software to assess millions of travelers and target those who might pose a threat.
The system has cost almost $100 million. But it has not been turned on because it sparked protests from legislators and civil liberties advocates who said it intruded too deeply into the lives of ordinary Americans. The Bush administration put off testing until after the election.

Now the choreographer of that program, a former intelligence official named Ben H. Bell III, is taking his ideas to a private company offshore, where he and his colleagues plan to use some of the same concepts, technology and contractors to assess people for risk -- outside the reach of U.S. regulators.

The plan - a collaboration between the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and other agencies - involves renewed scrutiny of mosques and interrogations of people whose national origin, religious faith, or political leanings might, in the eyes of the feds, indicate even the most far-flung relationship to "terrorism."

Why Are Some American Christians So Bloodthirsty?

by element115
It's been going on for years now. Almost daily we read that another child, another parent, another sister or brother, another grandpa or aunt, is killed in Afghanistan or Iraq by U.S. weaponry in Mr. Bush's "war on terror." Sometimes it's a wedding party, or a bunch of kids, or a family of six. Sometimes it's a journalist, or a whole group of journalists, who may even be killed on camera in real time for all the world to see and hear.
But no matter how bad it gets, nothing seems to change Americans' support for war, which for some reason is stiffest among Christian supporters of the Bush administration. "Stuff happens in a war zone." "Don't worry because God is in control." With these and other slogans, I've been reassured by countless pro-war Christians that, as long as civilians aren't intentionally targeted, taking their lives is okay, maybe even predestined, God's will.

"John" came over to make sure I got the message. I told him I?d taken my kids to similar events (we saw Clinton and Gore in 1996) and didn?t he think it was good to get my kids involved in the democratic process early? To take them to events such as these and let them make up their own minds? I guess not. He just kept repeating, in a rather intimidating way, that if I wasn?t a supporter, I wasn?t welcome.

It is already widely known that the Bush administration has ordered the American press not to take photographs of the caskets of military dead being returned home. Additionally, military operations in Iraq that are videotaped for newsreel presentation must be cleared by the military. Visual reports and videotapes of Iraqi civilians killed are prohibited unless approved by the American military. And fleeing and disoriented refugees are never seen or heard of.
As usual with the Bush administration, the explanations offered for this suppression of public information is "national security." Accurate reporting of the suffering of both our military and Iraqi civilians is offered as being counterproductive to the war effort and dangerously unpatriotic.
It is becoming increasingly safe to say that a growing majority of Americans are now opposed to the war, and want the American military pulled out of Iraq. If this is the way the majority feels, then suppressing the realities of Iraq serves only to deprive the American public of the real facts enabling our government to ignore the will of the people. This is not conducive to a truly safe, secure and free society.

Could the Associated Press (AP) Rig the Election?

by element115
The Associated Press (AP) will be the sole source of raw vote totals for the major news broadcasters on Election Night. However, AP spokesmen Jack Stokes and John Jones refused to explain to this journalist how the AP will receive that information. They refused to confirm or deny that the AP will receive direct feed from voting machines and central vote tabulating computers across the country. But, circumstantial evidence suggests that is exactly what will happen.

A Bush pre-election strike on Iran 'imminent'

by element115
According to White House and Washington Beltway insiders, the Bush administration, worried that it could lose the presidential election to Senator John F. Kerry, has initiated plans to launch a military strike on Iran's top Islamic leadership, its nuclear reactor at Bushehr on the Persian Gulf, and key nuclear targets throughout the country, including the main underground research site at Natanz in central Iran and another in Isfahan. Targets of the planned U.S. attack reportedly include mosques in Tehran, Qom, and Isfahan known by the U.S. to headquarter Iran's top mullahs.
In addition, Israel has been supplied by the United States with 500 "bunker buster" bombs. According to White House sources, the Israeli Air Force will attack Iran's nuclear facility at Bushehr with the U.S. bunker busters. The joint U.S.-Israeli pre-emptive military move against Iran reportedly was crafted by the same neo-conservative grouping in the Pentagon and Vice President Dick Cheney's office that engineered the invasion of Iraq.

Are you a terrorist?

by element115
The definition of 'terrorism', includes actions made 'with the intention of advancing a political, religious or ideological cause'. It is so broad that it would cover civil disobedience by peace groups, M1 and other anti-globalisation blockades, union pickets and strikes, actions to stop logging in forests and similar activities. The demonstrators who pushed over a fence at the refugee detention centre at Woomera would be defined as 'terrorists'...

Bushist Party bagmen and the rape of Iraq

All the usual inspiring elements are there: a couple of plucky kids starting a business with nothing but hustle and a whole lotta heart; a few lucky breaks crowned with big-time success; a duffel bag stuffed with millions in cash from a war-zone slush fund; a father and son held hostage at gunpoint to block a corruption probe, then dumped in hostile territory with no papers, no money, no protection.

Cult of Power

Now we know, from their own words, that the Bush Regime is a cult -- a cult whose god is Power, whose adherents believe that they alone control reality, that indeed they create the world anew with each act of their iron will. And the goal of this will -- undergirded by the cult's supreme virtues of war, fury and blind faith -- is likewise openly declared: "Empire."

The 'Catastrophic' Success of the Republican Party

by element115
As much as America and the world wish to believe Florida will not be rigged with electoral fraud this November, the sad truth is that all the mechanisms needed to steal the state in favor of George Bush are already firmly entrenched. Thanks to Jeb Bush, Jim Crow manipulator of mandates, corrupt fraudster, decimator of democracy and brother of the president, and the Republican Party, which in essence controls the logistics of and the keys to running the election, Florida has already declared tens of thousands of voters, mostly black and Democratic, ineligible. Many more voters, of all creeds and colors, will be disenfranchised on election day, be it through intimidation, coercion, government intervention, criminal negligence, corruption and fraud, and, of course, through electronic voting machines, most of which are owned by staunch Republican supporters.

The truth about Zelikow and the Sept. 11 cover-up commission

by element115
The Stanford Daily ---> The 9-11 Commission failed to mention or address the multiple war games / exercises that were being conducted that day, out of the White House. As many as five war game drills were in process, some involving hijacked airliners, a plane crashing into a building, some involving false blips deliberately inserted onto FAA and military radar screens.
One exercise pulled significant fighter resources away from the Northeastern United States on Sept. 11.
These exercises involved North American Air Defense Command, the Federal Aviation Administration, the Canadian Air Force, the CIA and the National Reconnaissance Office.
Coincidentally, in New York City, massive preparations were underway for a biochemical attack drill involving FEMA, the Mayor?s Office of Emergency Management, the FBI, the U.S. Department of Justice, Weill Medical College, the N.Y. Deptartment of Health, the N.Y. Fire Department, the N.Y. Police Department, the American Red Cross and the Port Authority.

President Bush has not really registered the failures in his life. When his early oil venture failed, he was bailed out by the Saudi oil family or by his father. But when he bets all his money on a lunatic invasion of Iraq, no one can bail him out. During his debates with John Kerry, no one could bail him out. When Kerry told him, in front of millions of people, that the war was wrongly begun, wrongly planned, wrongly carried out, he had to resort to making faces. There is only so much the Saudi oil family can do.

The art of stealing elections

by element115
The Boston Globe ---> The Rebublicans are out to steal the 2004 election -- before, during, and after Election Day. Before Election Day, they are employing such dirty tricks as improper purges of voter rolls, use of dummy registration groups that tear up Democratic registrations, and the suppression of Democratic efforts to sign up voters, especially blacks and students. On Election Day, Republicans will attempt to intimidate minority voters by having poll watchers threaten criminal prosecution if something is technically amiss with their ID, and they will again use technical mishaps to partisan advantage.
But the most serious assault on democracy itself is likely to come after Election Day.

Silenced By The President

by element115
Jacksonville is an old gold mining town. Our main street is only five blocks long, lined with restored storefronts. The sidewalks are narrow. We are a peaceful community. The prospect of an overnight presidential visit was exciting.
Police armed with high powered rifles perched upon our rooftops as the presidential motorcade approached. Helicopters flew low, overhead. A cadre of motorcycle police zoomed into town. Black SUVs followed, sandwiching several black limousines carrying the president, his wife and their entourage as they sped to the local inn where they would eat and sleep.
Anyone vocalizing anti-Bush or pro-Kerry sentiments were prohibited from venturing forward.
The chants were loud and apparently could be heard by President Bush. An order was issued that the anti-Bush rhetoric be quieted. The local SWAT team leapt to action. It happened fast. Clad in full riot gear, at least 50 officers moved in. Shouting indecipherable commands from a bullhorn, they formed a chain and bore down upon the people, only working to clear the side of the street appearing to be occupied by Kerry supporters. People tried to get out of their way. It was very crowded. There was nowhere to move. People were being crushed. They started flowing into the streets. Pleas to the officers, asking, "where to go" fell upon deaf ears. Instead, riot police fired pellets of cayenne pepper spray into the crowd. An old man fell and couldn,t get up. When a young man stopped to help, he was shot in the back with hard pepper spray balls. Children were hit with pepper spray. Deemed "Protesters" people were shoved and herded down the street by the menacing line of armed riot police, until out of the President's ear-shot.

Aftermath Of Editorial Endorsement

by element115
We have been told by several avid Bush supporters that the days when newspapers publish editorials without personal repercussions are over. As publishers, we have printed editorials for decades, and have endorsed candidates, both Republican and Democrat. When Bush was endorsed four years ago, the Gore supporters did not respond with threats, nor did Democrats when we endorsed Reagan twice. Republicans did not threaten us personally or our business when we endorsed Carter and Clinton for their first terms.

Israel more corrupt, third year running, says corruption index

In the new list Israel is ranked 26th, a drop from its 21st place ranking last year. Two years ago Israel placed 18th, and in 2000, 16th. It further emerges that Israel's points dropped in the last two years from 7.3 to 6.4.
The Palestinian Authority also showed a substantial increase in its level of corruption, and was ranked 108th, with 2.5 points, a drop from its 78th-place ranking last year.

The Guantanamoization of America

by element115
The ideologues in the U.S. administration claim it is some kind of battle between freedom and democracy on one side and barbarism and despotism on the other, a sort of battle between good and evil. This comic-book simplification of geopolitics is so patently absurd it hardly warrants a refutation. Yet, for the sake of argument, it should be said that the failure of these so-called defenders of freedom to address the root causes of what they call terrorism, such as hunger, poverty, injustice, occupation, and racism, gives the lie to their fake mission to save the world.

Stanley G. American Multinational Firms Stealing Iraqi Grain Seeds

by element115
In 2002, FAO estimated that 97 percent of Iraqi farmers used saved seed from their own stocks from last year's harvest or purchased from local markets. When the new law - on plant variety protection (PVP) - is put into effect, seed saving will be illegal and the market will only offer proprietary "PVP-protected" planting material "invented" by transnational agribusiness corporations. The new law totally ignores all the contributions Iraqi farmers have made to development of important crops like wheat, barley, date and pulses. Its consequences are the loss of farmers' freedoms and a grave threat to food sovereignty in Iraq. In this way, the US has declared a new war against the Iraqi farmer.
