Thousands protest against high food prices in Delhi

February 24, 2011 by element115
A steady stream of protesters, carrying red flags, has been marching through the streets of central Delhi since early morning.

The rally has led to massive traffic jams in the city.

Trade unions who have called the rally say nearly 40,000 people will attend a meeting at the Ramlila grounds.

Thousands will then march to parliament, they say.

Security is tight across the city with thousands of policemen deployed at the rally ground and along the route of the march.

Saudi King rushes home; announces $10.7b new benefits

by element115
Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah on Wednesday announced a series of benefits for citizens amounting to $10.7 billion, as he returned to the country after he spent three months abroad for health treatment, state television reported.

The steps include funding to offset high inflation and to aid young unemployed people and Saudi citizens studying abroad, as well the writing off some loans, media reports said.

The move comes as governments in the region scramble to deal with pro-democracy uprisings sparked by youth unemployment and political repression.

"CIA spy" Davis was giving nuclear bomb material to Al-Qaeda, says report

by element115
Double murder-accused US official Raymond Davis has been found in possession of top-secret CIA documents, which point to him or the feared American Task Force 373 (TF373) operating in the region, providing Al-Qaeda terrorists with "nuclear fissile material" and "biological agents," according to a report.

Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) is warning that the situation on the sub-continent has turned "grave" as it appears that open warfare is about to break out between Pakistan and the United States, The European Union Times reports.

The SVR warned in its report that the apprehension of 36-year-old Davis, who shot dead two Pakistani men in Lahore last month, had fuelled this crisis.

According to the report, the combat skills exhibited by Davis, along with documentation taken from him after his arrest, prove that he is a member of US' TF373 black operations unit currently operating in the Afghan War Theatre and Pakistan's tribal areas, the paper said.

Ukrainian mercenaries flying Libya air force planes

by element115
Mercenary pilots from Ukraine are flying Libyan air force planes supporting the regime of embattled Libyan leader Moamer Gaddafi, a major newspaper reported Thursday.

The Ukrainian pilots, some of whom hold senior rank in the Libyan air force, operate MiG-21 and MiG-23 fighter jets as well as An-12 and An-26 cargo planes, the Segodnya newspaper said.

Stratfor, a private firm that does political analysis, reported on Tuesday that Ukrainian mercenaries piloted planes that had bombed hundreds of protesters near the Libyan capital Tripoli. A spokesman at Ukraine's embassy in Tripoli denied that report.

Security Perimeter: Harper government’s Big Lie to Canadians… and Americans

by element115
When Stephen Harper and Barack Obama refer to “common security border arrangements” they actually mean ‘NO BORDER’.

There would no longer be an international boundary between the United States and Canada, if the United States government through Homeland Security effectively controlled the Canadian border, along with national security arrangements and the oversight of the implementation of domestic laws including those on privacy.

The Harper government is selling-out the complete package of the remainder on Canadian sovereignty, while having the audacity to claim the Agreement they pursue with the American president, “has nothing to do with sovereignty”.

The Harper government’s claim according as defined by the Canadian Criminal Code, is nothing short of ‘treason’.

Egypt: I ask Myself Why

by element115
Why would authorities in a European county like Switzerland entertain the idea of trying George W. Bush for torture if he came to give a talk in that country;

But, European countries are supporting Omar Suleiman for interim president of Egypt, even though he was the one who undertook the torture for Bush? Suleiman tossed some 30,000 suspected Muslim fundamentalists in prison, and accepted from the US CIA kidnapped suspected militants, whom he had tortured. Some were innocent. One, Sheikh Libi, was tortured into falsely confessing that Saddam Hussein was training al-Qaeda operatives, an allegation that straight into Colin Powell’s speech to the UN justifying the Iraq War.

I ask myself why.

Who are the pro-Mubarak demonstrators?

by element115
The morning after Mubarak dramatically announced he would not run for re-election in September, his supporters waded into Tahrir Square by the thousands, and suddenly, serious, prolonged violence reigned in central Cairo.

There were immediate suspicions that the pro-Mubarak demonstrators were not simply average citizens standing up for the man who has led Egypt for three decades -- suspicions that proved at least partly founded.

As battles raged between the two sides, some pro-Mubarak protesters were captured by his opponents. Some were terrified to be caught and begged for their lives, screaming that the government had paid them to come out and protest.

Others turned out to be carrying what seemed to be police identification, though they were dressed in plain clothes.

Anger starting to focus on Israel, US

by element115
Saturday’s optimism on the streets of Cairo for imminent political change gave way to anger on Sunday, as thousands of demonstrators became increasingly frustrated with the lack of response from major world leaders, especially the US.

During the main protest on Sunday in downtown Cairo, one man painted a 20- meter-long message in flowing Arabic cursive that echoed across the square: “Go Away, Mubarak, you are from the Americans, and you’re working for them!”

They blame Israel and the US for supporting a government because it is convenient for them, not because it is good for the Egyptian people.

“The USA does not support democracy; they’re supporting Israel, which is like their baby,” said Ahmed, a 26-year-old Cairo resident.
“But will Israel allow us to have a real president?"

Saudi Prince Turki bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud has warned the country's royal family to step down and flee before a military coup or a popular uprising overthrows the kingdom.

He warned that the Saudi royal family is no longer able to "impose" itself on people, arguing that deviations in carrying out the religious concepts that make up the basis of the Saudi government "have gotten out of our hands," so that the opposition views our acts as "interfering in people's private life and restricting their liberties."

"If we are wise, we must leave this country to its people, whose dislike for us is increasing," said Prince Turki, advising Saudi officials to escape with their families.

"Do not fool yourself by relying on the United States or Britain or Israel, because they will not survive the loss; the only door open is now the exit door of no return. Let us go before it closes."

ARE WE FINALLY SEEING THE SUN SET OVER THE AMERICAN EMPYRE

by element115
Watching the ‘news’ on the Fox Network last night was like watching a skit on Comedy Central. It wasn’t about why events were taking place in Egypt, but the emphasis was on what it means to the price of oil (up $4.00 a barrel since the rioting broke out). Who controls those prices? It was about who was behind the ‘riots’. The report started out by saying that they were sparked by university students posting their feelings on FaceBook, calling it a ‘Web Inspired Revolution’ ….. but ending with the support of The Muslim Brotherhood, Al Quaida, Hamas and of course, the Iranian government. In other words, it’s the Boogey Man that is behind the ‘riots’. They obviously have nothing to do with the fact that the people of Egypt are sick and tired of living under a dictatorship.

It is rather more the fear among the rulers of these unwieldy regimes – a fear, or at least grave concern, that must also be seeping into the corridors of power in Washington and other Western capitals.

Egypt Turns Off the Internet

by element115
Egypt's decision to turn off the Internet last night, denying users access to Twitter, Facebook and text messaging, couldn't stop thousands of protesters from taking to the streets of Cairo Friday morning, with similar demonstrations in Suez, Alexandria and Al Arish in northern Sinai. Supporters of pro-democracy leader Mohammed ElBaradei, who called for the ouster of President Hosni Mubarak, flooded out of mosques after noon prayer. Police greeted them with tear gas and rubber bullets. According to the AP, who has raw footage of a man being shot, they used a water cannon on Nobel laureate ElBaradei and beat protesters who tried to shield him. Egyptian protesters have been particularly effective at utilizing social media to organize and mobilize—this past Tuesday's demonstration was largely arranged via Twitter. Egypt can turn off the Internet—but it can't stop satellite TV. Although news media efforts to report on events on the ground have been hampered by the communications clampdown, Al Jazeera has moved to fill the vacuum.

Are We Witnessing the Start of a Global Revolution?

by element115
For the first time in human history almost all of humanity is politically activated, politically conscious and politically interactive... The resulting global political activism is generating a surge in the quest for personal dignity, cultural respect and economic opportunity in a world painfully scarred by memories of centuries-long alien colonial or imperial domination...

It seems as if the world is entering the beginnings of a new revolutionary era: the era of the ‘Global Political Awakening.’ While this ‘awakening’ is materializing in different regions, different nations and under different circumstances, it is being largely influenced by global conditions. The global domination by the major Western powers, principally the United States, over the past 65 years, and more broadly, centuries, is reaching a turning point. The people of the world are restless, resentful, and enraged. Change, it seems, is in the air.

Vice President's comments are unlikely to be well-received by regime opponents, as they fit a narrative of steadfast US support for a government they want to bring down. About eight protesters and one policeman have died this week as Egypt has sought to bring down the heavy hand of the state against opponents. Since the US provides about $1.3 billion in military aid to Egypt a year, the repressive apparatus of the state is seen by many in Egypt as hand in glove with the US.

Egyptian protests intensify, as clashes spread across the Middle East

January 27, 2011 by element115
Security forces shot dead a Bedouin protester in Egypt's Sinai region on Thursday, bringing the death in the three days of protests to five. Police in Suez fired rubber bullets, water cannon and tear gas at hundreds of demonstrators calling for an end to the 30-year-old rule of Hosni Mubarak, the Egyptian president. Protesters chucked rocks and petrol bombs at police lines. In Ismailia, hundreds of protesters clashed with police, who dispersed the crowds with tear gas.

Google Censors BitTorrent, RapidShare, Others

by element115
It seems like the content industry has managed to score another hit in its 'fight' against piracy, and this time, it's a big fish. Announced a few weeks ago already, Google has started censoring its auto-complete and instant features for an arbitrary set of search terms - such as 'bittorrent', 'torrent', 'rapidshare', and any terms derived from those (e.g. 'ubuntu torrent' is censored as well).

DoD on Bradley Manning, Julian Assange and Wikileaks

by element115
Q: Geoff, is it true that prosecutors have not been able to tie Private [Bradley] Manning to Julian Assange and essentially make a link between the two in the case?

MR. MORRELL: Well, what I would say on this is, as much as I'd like to weigh into this, this is, as you know, an ongoing criminal investigation. So it would be inappropriate for me to speak to any -- with any specificity to these issues.

But I would avail myself of this opportunity to admonish or warn you all to be extraordinarily careful about how you report on this story, because one thing I can -- I do feel comfortable in telling you is that this case is being taken extremely seriously by the investigators both here in the Defense Department and, of course, at the Department of Justice. They are hard at work at on building a case here.

So any pronouncements about a connection or lack of connection, those that have been found or are yet to be found, are just premature at this point. So I'd urge everybody to proceed with caution on this, and probably most stories, for that matter.

Palestinians Condemn Betrayal By Unelected Palestinian Leadership

by element115
Long before these revelations, Al-Awda, The Palestine Right to Return Coalition, its members, supporters and people of conscience in the US and around the world were already deeply suspicious of the maneuvering against the Palestinian people that Saeb Erekat, Ahmad Qurei and others demonstrated during these secret negotiations over the past many years. The Palestine Papers released by Al-Jazeerah confirm our people’s worst fears. What the PA officials committed is a grave breach of duty and a betrayal of their own people.

The chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and sitting PA president Mr. Mahmoud Abbas, whose term has long expired, bears full responsibility. We demand his immediate resignation or removal from office. A self-appointed puppet leadership beholden only to its US and Israeli occupation masters cannot be allowed to stand. It does not represent the aspirations of the Palestinian people, the vast majority of whom are living in forced exile.

Iran not working on bomb: Israel intelligence head

by element115
Kochavi said it was unlikely that Iran, which currently enriches uranium to 20 percent, would start enriching it to the 90 percent level needed for a bomb, because it would be in open breach of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty exposing it to harsher sanctions or even a US or Israeli military strike.

He said Iran was reluctant to do this at a time when the country was going through a period of "instability" and "religious tension."

Palestinians give Abbas hero's welcome after he denounces 'Palestine papers'

by element115
"We will go to Jerusalem, a million martyrs strong," the crowd of over 3,000 chanted, in a rousing endorsement for Abbas using a famous slogan not heard since the days of his more charismatic predecessor, Yasser Arafat.

"The Palestinian principles ... have not and will not change and the first of them is that East Jerusalem is the capital of the state of Palestine," Abbas said to cheers from supporters from all over the occupied West Bank.

He said Al Jazeera had used "fake" documents in its bid to convict Abbas's Palestinian Authority of cowardice and duplicity in confidential talks with Israel over concessions it would make for a peace treaty and a Palestinian state.

"No one in the world can make us give up on a centimeter of our land, the issue of the refugees or the issue of Jerusalem," Abbas told the people. Their rally was "the most important response to what Al Jazeera alleged," the president said.

Three dead in Egypt protests

by element115
Two civilians and a police officer have died after a wave of unusually large anti-government demonstrations swept across Egypt, calling for the ouster of longtime president Hosni Mubarak.

In central Cairo, crowds numbering in the thousands protested and clashed with police throughout the day. Shortly after midnight on Wednesday morning, security forces violently dispersed those who remained in Tahrir Square, the heart of the city, Al Jazeera's Adam Makary reported.

Security officers fired tear gas, water cannons and rubber bullets to drive the protesters from the square, where they had chosen to remain throughout the night in protest. An Al Jazeera cameraman was shot with rubber bullets several times, including once in the face, Makary said.

Telephone communication with people in central Cairo was nearly impossible, but Makary reported that the crowds, which had been peaceful, had been forced to escape the police, who fired dozens of tear gas canisters.

He said there was "an apparent cover-up" by the US government over its knowledge of the attacks masterminded by Osama bin Laden.

Two decades of secret Israeli-Palestinian accords leaked to media worldwide

by element115
Al-Jazeera TV begins leaking 1,600 secret documents: PA agreed to concede almost all of East Jerusalem to Israel, accept Israeli demand to recognize Israel as a Jewish state.

Palestinian negotiators secretly agreed to concede almost all of East Jerusalem to Israel, Al-Jazeera TV reported Sunday, as part of a series of 1,600 secret documents regarding Israeli-Palestinian negotiations efforts over the last several years that are due to be released.

The documents reveal confidential concessions offered by Palestinian negotiators, including on the issue of the right of return of Palestinian refugees, as well as serious territorial concessions.

Al-Jazeera TV reports that the Palestinian Authority offered in June 15 of 2008 that Israel annex all settlements in Jerusalem except Har Homa, the first time in history the Palestinians made such a proposal, one that they refused to in Camp David.

Saeb Erekat, the chief Palestinian negotiator, also proposed in an October 2009 meeting that Jerusalem's Old City be divided, giving Israel the control over the Jewish Quarter and part of the Armenian Quarter.

Further details reveal a Palestinian agreement to the return of solely 10,000 Palestinian refugees into Israel, and that Erekat agreed to the Israeli demand of recognizing Israel as a Jewish state.

The documents detail the last two decades' negotiations on Israel-Palestinian peace efforts, which were classified as highly secret.

Secret papers reveal slow death of Middle East peace process

by element115

A cache of thousands of pages of confidential Palestinian records covering more than a decade of negotiations with Israel and the US has been obtained by al-Jazeera TV and shared exclusively with the Guardian. The papers provide an extraordinary and vivid insight into the disintegration of the 20-year peace process, which is now regarded as all but dead.

...some reactions to the leak -->

Shows how supine the PA is and proves that Edward Said was right - by signing the Oslo Accords, the PLO forfeited any claim to be a genuine national liberation movement and was satisfied at being a security subcontractor to the Israelis.

And people wonder why Palestinians saw Hamas as a more attractive leadership than Fateh, without evening having to take religion into account!

Thanks to the Guardian and all those involved in releasing these vital documents. What more vivid exposure of what a 'moderate Palestinian leadership' or 'partner for peace' really is, nothing more than a leadership bending over backwards to meet Israel demands.

The sick joke is that Israel isn't content to have a Palestinian leadership legitimise her apartheid regime and great land robbery, it wants more.

Surely this leak benefits Israel:
-exposing Palestinian negotiating positions
-spreading further disunity amongst palestinians

How tragic. This will surely turn ordinary Palestinians and their Arab neighbours away from any any moderate leadership in future, and I doubt even the fiercest Western pressure will persuade Israel to recognise Hamas as a legitimate political body, leaving only yet more violence as the way ahead.

Why do western governments still support Israel, I wonder?

Appeasement of Israel is getting nowhere. Major and meaningful sanctions need to be put in place against this monstrosity and fast.
Israel's contempt for both her Palestinian neighbours and for international law is repugnant in the extreme and makes hypocrites of her western allies.

Perfidious Albion! - A friend of Israel ? -A nickname for Great Britain that is well deserved.

...when are people going to wake up to the fact that none of this stuff is even supposed to be resolved? The turmoil is being sustained to keep populations oppressed.

McCarthy Comes to the Knesset

by element115
It seems inevitable that after 44 years in which one nation occupies another and deprives it of basic human and civil rights, the occupying society would also come to be affected by the occupation. Indeed, increasingly the tools of occupation — the restrictions of personal and political freedoms — are no longer confined to the territories. These methods are now being extended beyond the Green Line, which divides sovereign Israel from the occupied West Bank, and are tainting Israeli democracy. The rise of Avigdor Lieberman — whose Yisrael Beiteinu party sponsored the push for the investigative panel — and the presence in the Knesset of unabashed racists like Michael Ben-Ari, a Kahanist who represents the National Union party, is testament to how the ongoing occupation is penetrating Israeli society.
