Anger starting to focus on Israel, US

Saturday’s optimism on the streets of Cairo for imminent political change gave way to anger on Sunday, as thousands of demonstrators became increasingly frustrated with the lack of response from major world leaders, especially the US.

During the main protest on Sunday in downtown Cairo, one man painted a 20- meter-long message in flowing Arabic cursive that echoed across the square: “Go Away, Mubarak, you are from the Americans, and you’re working for them!”

They blame Israel and the US for supporting a government because it is convenient for them, not because it is good for the Egyptian people.

“The USA does not support democracy; they’re supporting Israel, which is like their baby,” said Ahmed, a 26-year-old Cairo resident.
“But will Israel allow us to have a real president?"

Prince warns S. Arabia of apocalypse

Watching the ‘news’ on the Fox Network last night was like watching a skit on Comedy Central. It wasn’t about why events were taking place in Egypt, but the emphasis was on what it means to the price of oil (up $4.00 a barrel since the rioting broke out). Who controls those prices? It was about who was behind the ‘riots’. The report started out by saying that they were sparked by university students posting their feelings on FaceBook, calling it a ‘Web Inspired Revolution’ ….. but ending with the support of The Muslim Brotherhood, Al Quaida, Hamas and of course, the Iranian government. In other words, it’s the Boogey Man that is behind the ‘riots’. They obviously have nothing to do with the fact that the people of Egypt are sick and tired of living under a dictatorship.

While the US favours Egyptian political reform in theory, in practice it props up an authoritarian system for pragmatic reasons of national self-interest. Egypt Turns Off the Internet

Egypt's decision to turn off the Internet last night, denying users access to Twitter, Facebook and text messaging, couldn't stop thousands of protesters from taking to the streets of Cairo Friday morning, with similar demonstrations in Suez, Alexandria and Al Arish in northern Sinai. Supporters of pro-democracy leader Mohammed ElBaradei, who called for the ouster of President Hosni Mubarak, flooded out of mosques after noon prayer. Police greeted them with tear gas and rubber bullets. According to the AP, who has raw footage of a man being shot, they used a water cannon on Nobel laureate ElBaradei and beat protesters who tried to shield him. Egyptian protesters have been particularly effective at utilizing social media to organize and mobilize—this past Tuesday's demonstration was largely arranged via Twitter. Egypt can turn off the Internet—but it can't stop satellite TV. Although news media efforts to report on events on the ground have been hampered by the communications clampdown, Al Jazeera has moved to fill the vacuum.

Egyptian protests intensify, as clashes spread across the Middle East

Security forces shot dead a Bedouin protester in Egypt's Sinai region on Thursday, bringing the death in the three days of protests to five. Police in Suez fired rubber bullets, water cannon and tear gas at hundreds of demonstrators calling for an end to the 30-year-old rule of Hosni Mubarak, the Egyptian president. Protesters chucked rocks and petrol bombs at police lines. In Ismailia, hundreds of protesters clashed with police, who dispersed the crowds with tear gas.

They are hard at work at on building a case here.

So any pronouncements about a connection or lack of connection, those that have been found or are yet to be found, are just premature at this point. So I'd urge everybody to proceed with caution on this, and probably most stories, for that matter.

"No one in the world can make us give up on a centimeter of our land, the issue of the refugees or the issue of Jerusalem," Abbas told the people. Their rally was "the most important response to what Al Jazeera alleged," the president said.

Three dead in Egypt protests

Two civilians and a police officer have died after a wave of unusually large anti-government demonstrations swept across Egypt, calling for the ouster of longtime president Hosni Mubarak.

In central Cairo, crowds numbering in the thousands protested and clashed with police throughout the day. Shortly after midnight on Wednesday morning, security forces violently dispersed those who remained in Tahrir Square, the heart of the city, Al Jazeera's Adam Makary reported.

Security officers fired tear gas, water cannons and rubber bullets to drive the protesters from the square, where they had chosen to remain throughout the night in protest. An Al Jazeera cameraman was shot with rubber bullets several times, including once in the face, Makary said.

Telephone communication with people in central Cairo was nearly impossible, but Makary reported that the crowds, which had been peaceful, had been forced to escape the police, who fired dozens of tear gas canisters.

Palestinian negotiators secretly agreed to concede almost all of East Jerusalem to Israel, Al-Jazeera TV reported Sunday, as part of a series of 1,600 secret documents regarding Israeli-Palestinian negotiations efforts over the last several years that are due to be released.

The documents reveal confidential concessions offered by Palestinian negotiators, including on the issue of the right of return of Palestinian refugees, as well as serious territorial concessions.

Al-Jazeera TV reports that the Palestinian Authority offered in June 15 of 2008 that Israel annex all settlements in Jerusalem except Har Homa, the first time in history the Palestinians made such a proposal, one that they refused to in Camp David.

Saeb Erekat, the chief Palestinian negotiator, also proposed in an October 2009 meeting that Jerusalem's Old City be divided, giving Israel the control over the Jewish Quarter and part of the Armenian Quarter.

Further details reveal a Palestinian agreement to the return of solely 10,000 Palestinian refugees into Israel, and that Erekat agreed to the Israeli demand of recognizing Israel as a Jewish state.

The documents detail the last two decades' negotiations on Israel-Palestinian peace efforts, which were classified as highly secret.

Thanks to the Guardian and all those involved in releasing these vital documents. What more vivid exposure of what a 'moderate Palestinian leadership' or 'partner for peace' really is, nothing more than a leadership bending over backwards to meet Israel demands.

The sick joke is that Israel isn't content to have a Palestinian leadership legitimise her apartheid regime and great land robbery, it wants more.

Surely this leak benefits Israel:
-exposing Palestinian negotiating positions
-spreading further disunity amongst palestinians

How tragic. This will surely turn ordinary Palestinians and their Arab neighbours away from any any moderate leadership in future, and I doubt even the fiercest Western pressure will persuade Israel to recognise Hamas as a legitimate political body, leaving only yet more violence as the way ahead.

Why do western governments still support Israel, I wonder?

Appeasement of Israel is getting nowhere. Major and meaningful sanctions need to be put in place against this monstrosity and fast.
Israel's contempt for both her Palestinian neighbours and for international law is repugnant in the extreme and makes hypocrites of her western allies.

Turkey: Israel's Gaza flotilla probe has no value or credibility
